What are your 5 favorite filters?
Here are my top 5:
1. Cubism (Filters->Artistic->Cubism) 2. Lighting Effects (Filters->Light Effects->Lighting Effects) 3. Wind (Filters->Distort->Wind) 4. Displace (Filters->Map->Displace) 5. Xach-Effect (Filters->Shawdows->Xach-Effect)

Lately I have been using less filters, and more brushes and blending, but these are probably the 5 I find most useful:
Blur Color to Alpha Noise Softglow Gfig

I barely use filters too. My sigs are almost 100% brushing.

I think that brushing and blending are what separate beginner's GIMP works from advanced ones. I know flame renders are really popular, and I used them in the past myself, but learning how to compose with the brushes and drawing tools is much better.

I'm starting to learn how to make the flames from the filter with brushes, with each part a different layer. And I'll say one thing, it's not very easy.

tolop, you don't need good brushes. I don't use any created or downloaded brushes and I can still make them look good. You should start using brushes in every sig, and in each new sig use more and more brushes, because after a while you'll get better.

Bump Map!! I use it on almost every sig. Also alien map makes some funky colors.

I would second what twiggy said about the brushes. I do use a few downloaded brushes, but for the most part I find the stock ones that come with GIMP are good enough when you make good use of layers, opacity, and smudging.

I like to use the vine, sparkle (I think it's called sparkle), and the hollowed-out squares.

The vine brush is pretty good when used for smudging.

I've used mainly the cubism, unsharp mask, gausian blur, and motion blur filters. The one I probably use most is Unsharp mask (FILTERS > ENHANCE > UNSHARP MASK).
